Orthography
- (Greek orthographia, from orthos - correct and graphio - I write) - the rules that establish the uniformity of methods of voice transmission on the letter. O. determines the transmission of sounds (phonemes) by letters; merging, separate and hyphenated spelling of words; the use of capital letters; ways of transfer. Sometimes as a synonym for O. the term "spelling" is used, which has a wider meaning, including punctuation.
